Meeting, Greeting and Building Community

Helping your learners get to know you as catechist  and one another is one of the first items on your agenda for the first several faith formation sessions--no matter the age group. Because you may need more than one session to get acquainted, here are some creative activity ideas from which to choose.

How would you  make these activities into faith concepts?

Assisting Families When Confronted by Difficult Situations

Catechists need assistance in helping our children and youth and their families deal with difficult situations that come up in the news and in their community. Here is a webpage that offers resources in providing support and approaches to help children feel safe. It also gives adults who care for them understanding and tips for when children and youth turn to you as someone to talk to about their concerns.

How we welcome our learners and families in the beginning of the year can set the tone for meeting your catechetical goals in your sessions. Seeing the significance of gestures and words of welcome early help to create that comfortable learning environment for each child and their family. As the year progresses, your modeling of consideration for each person will help them understand the life of Jesus when they hear stories in the bible. As Jesus met people needing his care and concern in the Gospels, he saw each person as an individual with dignity and met them with respect. This blog post from "Catechist's Journey" offers a way to be attuned to those opening moments when you are meeting your learners for the first time.
